Watch the SCS Cello Ensemble perform Édith Piaf’s ‘Hymne à l’amour’, which was recorded during the group’s tour of Denmark and ending with a Vienna Philharmonic Ball performance, in January 2024. The ensemble comprises seven young cellists from seven different countries and with links to the Scandinavian Cello School (SCS), as well as SCS founder Jacob Shaw. The arrangement for eight cellos was made by Maria Leszczyńska-Thieu, who also plays in the group.

The tour included a return visit to the hospital where Shaw was treated for stage 4 cancer, an experience which he recounted in an article for The Strad. The visit is captured in Where Music Grows (Et klassisk liv), a feature documentary directed by Katrine Philp, premiering at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen in March 2026. The documentary also features the Piaf single.

The cellists are: Jacob Shaw (UK-Denmark) Petra Kušan (Croatia) Luka Coetzee (Canada) Tara Stranegger (Austria) Gustaw Bafeltowski (Poland) Tzu-Shao Chao (Taiwan) Maria Leszczyńska-Thieu (Poland) and Johannes Gray (US).

The production team comprises: Good Company Pictures Label (film); SCS Collection/Evidence Classics (label); Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir (music producer and sound engineer); and Marc Casanovas (sound engineer). The video is copyright of Scandinavian Cello School Film.

The Scandinavian Cello School is a unique institution where classical cello training meets sustainable farm living in Stevns, Denmark. Students engage with both musical excellence and practical land stewardship.
