Anglican chant inspires a new string quartet
Based on the topic of ‘industry’, the Solem Quartet’s upcoming tour will include British composer William Marsey’s new work for quartet, Chorales. The piece draws on Marsey’s upbringing in Hartlepool: ‘a classic example of a post-industrial UK town’, as he calls it. ‘People often think of machinery when they think of industry,’ he continues, ‘but having grown up in Hartlepool, I actually see it more in terms of community.’ One of these communal experiences was that of church music – in particular Anglican chant, which inspired the piece…
