’I don’t think it’s a difficult decision for people to travel for the masterclass, because it has good teachers, good company, and the seaside in summer!’ says the Croatian violinist

The International Music School Upbeat was somehow always a part of my life. I’m from Croatia, and ever since I was nine or ten my teacher was always telling me ‘Practise, and when you are good enough you will go for the masterclass.’ I was twelve the first time I went, and I’ve gone every summer since – eleven years in a row now.

If it’s a longer masterclass with more participants then we have lessons maybe every other day, but otherwise it’s every day. Usually we wake up and have breakfast, go for a lesson, and listen to other classes – although that depends on how much work the teacher gives us – and after lunch we go for a swim and then practise again. There are usually concerts in the evenings, after which all the instrumentalists hang out, and then we go to sleep.

The age range depends on the teacher and their specialisation, but I’ve seen everyone from 5 to over 30 coming from all over the world! I don’t think it’s a difficult decision for people to travel for the masterclass, because it has good teachers, good company, and the seaside in summer!

My favourite part is after the final concert, when everybody is happy (or not) with how they played. The work is done so we sit together and talk about next year, sharing memories and stories between teachers and students. Another special moment for me was meeting my current teacher for the first time, who I’m now studying with in Austria.

The atmosphere is great, because even though the organisers crazy busy, they’re always there with a smile and always willing to help. They just want people feel good, and that’s how it’s grown over the years and people keep coming back. Many masterclasses are special, but this one they really do with lots of love.

My advice for those thinking of attending is to bring good vibes, and everything will work out!
