UPDATE: The viola has been found and Sarah-Jane Bradley has collected it from Gravesend, London.

Violist Sarah-Jane Bradley has reported the theft of her instrument and bows from a train on Friday 9 January.

They were stolen between 1545-1600 on the Southeastern train between Greenwich and Woolwich, London.

The viola is by G.A. Chanot of Manchester, 1896, measuring 16 1/4”. It is dark brown/orange in colour, has pegs with gold tips and the name inscribed under the end pin in black ink. The one-piece back resembles Tiger’s Eye stone.

Two bows were also with the viola. One by Vidoudez of Geneva, with tortoiseshell frog and elaborately decorated gold mount. The other is by W.E. Hill and Sons, with tortoiseshell frog and silver mount.

The instrument and bows were contained in a dark grey Bam case, with the viola wrapped in a magenta-coloured silk scarf.

Bradley is offering a reward for the safe return of the instrument, which she says holds great personal value. The viola has been Bradley’s professional instrument since 1993, on which she has made numerous solo and chamber music recordings.
