Violist Wenhan Jiang assumes the role, having previously served as principal viola of Ulster Orchestra
London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has appointed Chinese violist Wenhan Jiang as its new co-principal violist, making the announcement on social media:
‘The orchestra’s family is growing as we welcome Wenhan Jiang as our new co-principal viola. We’re very pleased to have him with us!’
Jiang studied with Paul Silverthorne at the Royal Academy of Music and was the recipient of the school’s Theodore Holland Viola Prize. He won third prize at the Oskar Nedbal Competition in 2021, and was previously viola section leader of the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast. Jiang has also been invited to perform at numerous international festivals, including the Lucerne Festival, the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and the Pacific Music Festival.
‘I’m thoroughly enjoying my time with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!’ said Jiang. ‘This wonderful ensemble inspires everyone to excel. I’m looking forward to many more concerts and tours!’
