The cellist recently celebrated his 75th birthday and a return to the stage

Julian Lloyd Webber has confirmed that he is to receive treatment for prostate cancer.
The cellist said on Facebook:
’I did not want to let anyone down so I kept my diagnosis secret until after my birthday concert but now I need to begin treatment as soon as possible.
’I am encouraged by the expectations of the medical team and look forward to making a full recovery. I am not intending to cancel engagements and I won’t comment any further on this matter until after the treatment.’
The cellist celebrated his 75th birthday on 14 April and only recently returned to the stage after a twelve-year absence.
Lloyd Webber is one of Britain’s most renowned cellists, having performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with conductors such as Georg Solti, Neville Marriner, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mark Elder and others.
As an educator, he founded the UK Government’s Harmony programme in 2007 and chairs Sistema England. The two programmes combined have introduced more than 60,000 school children from the least privileged parts of England to music.
He was made a fellow at the Royal College of Music in 1994 and was a recipient of a Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum in 1998. In 2025 he was appointed principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire. During his tenure, the school was awarded royal status by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Strad wishes him well with his treatment.
