The German quartet receives €10,000 in recognition of its outstanding artistic achievement and the preservation of the composer’s musical legacy

The Mandelring Quartet has been announced as the recipient of this year’s Brahms Prize, receiving €10,000. Bestowed by the Brahms Society of Schleswig-Holstein, the award recognises outstanding artistic achievement and the preservation of the composer’s musical legacy.
Founded in 1983 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany, the quartet comprises violinists Sebastian Schmidt and Nanette Schmidt, violist Andreas Willwohl, and cellist Bernhard Schmidt.
It rose to prominence upon winning the Premio Paolo Borciani and ARD Competition and has since performed at festivals including Beethovenfest Bonn, the Schubertiade, and the Salzburg and Enescu festivals.
The Mandelring Quartet has released over 30 CD recordings to critical acclaim, receiving accolades such as the German Record Critics’ award and International Classical Music Award nominations.
The Brahms Prize award ceremony will take place on 26 September at St Bartholomew’s Church in Wesselburen, Germany. Previous string recipients include violinists Midori, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Christian Tetzlaff and cellist Peter Wispelwey.
