Julian Lloyd Webber has announced successful treatment for prostate cancer, following his diagnosis in April this year.

The cellist received his cancer diagnosis just before he was due to return to the concert platform after twelve years to celebrate his 75th birthday, as well as the publication of his autobiography, Bows and Arrows.

Lloyd Webber concealed the news of his diagnosis until after his birthday concert in April, saying: ’I did not want to let anyone down.’

After months of intensive treatment, Lloyd Webber said ’I am so thankful for all the expert care I received.’

Following a recent change to national guidance, men aged over 50 will no longer be automatically entitled to a blood test to help identify the disease, with GPs instead deciding on a case-by-case basis who is given one.

Until now, any man over the age of 50 was entitled to a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test via their GP. They did not have to have symptoms.

’I was shocked to learn that my request for an NHS blood test might now be refused. I would never have discovered that I had prostate cancer without that blood test. I feel very grateful and now, after my successful treatment, I can’t wait to start my Irish tour next week.’

Lloyd Webber and his wife Jiaxin Lloyd Webber will begin their tour of Ireland in Donaghmore on 25 August.
