Haydn wrote this trio for the well-known virtuoso pianist Therese Bartolozzi while he was in London in 1795, and it was published in 1797. The piece shows that the instruments share a more equal role, like in Beethoven’s trios, than people often expect in Haydn’s trios. The cello may have more to do in Beethoven’s trios than Haydn’s, but its primary role as the harmonic anchor remains the same…
