The competition seeks to find musicians of any instrument or voice type with an affinity for Piazzolla’s work

Marking Astor Piazzolla’s 100th anniversary, the Fundacioìn Astor Piazzolla is launching the first edition of the Piazzolla Music Competition. 

The competition, aimed at both soloists and ensembles, seeks to find musicians of any instrument or voice type, with an affinity for Piazzola’s work, who will be able to add to the composer’s catalogue. Applicants can include pre-professional or professional soloists or ensembles of no more than six. They can be of any nationality, and must be over the age of 13. 

Entrants are required to send in video submissions as either a soloist or ensemble, performing to the music of Piazzolla, with the competition winners being announced on 15 June 2021.

Submission videos must show the musicians with hands and faces fully visible in one, unedited take. In order to comply with Covid-19 precautions, new ensemble videos may be recorded in one unedited take, and must date to 1 January 2020 or later.

The grand prize includes a cash reward of $3500, a recording and release deal with PARMA Recordings’s Navona Records, as well as a concert tour throughout China arranged and funded by PARMA. Other prizes include a masterclass from Pablo Zeigler, and an invitation to perform with a leading overseas orchestra. Applicants can submit their videos until the deadline of 18 April 2021.

Sitting on the jury will be Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler, Grammy Award-winning bandoneonist Heìctor del Curto; and Daniel Villaflor Piazzolla, grandson of Piazzolla and vice president of Fundacioìn Astor Piazzolla, amongst others.
