The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) will honour distinguished artists for their contributions to the world of music at a ceremony on 11 December, alongside 225 graduating students.

Among the fellows, honorary members and associate members are several string players. Chief executive of Manchester Camerata and RNCM alumnus, Bob Riley, will be named as an honorary member. Prior to his work at Manchester Camerata, Riley worked as a freelance violinist and violist with many of the UK’s orchestras.

Seven special guests will receive fellowships from the conservatoire in recognition of their work as musicians, educators and creatives. Among these are professor Anna Reid, senior educator at the Sydney Conservatorium, and Chinese-Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin.

Ten alumni of the college will be named RNCM associate members in acknowledgement of their personal achievements in the worlds of music and learning. Among the cohort is leader of Sinfonia Viva and violinist Sophie Rosa.

Ahead of the ceremony, Riley said: ‘We all know the power of music when it’s performed, and in the many other brilliant ways it supports our society. It’s something Greater Manchester organisations do very well, especially when we do it together.

’At the heart of it all are individual musicians who work tirelessly throughout their careers, to reach ever higher artistic standards and new ways of doing things. Acknowledging and thanking them for this, and the funders and philanthropists who enable much of it, has never been more important.’
