The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) in Brisbane, Australia, has bid farewell to its associate concertmaster Alan Smith.

Smith joined the QSO in 1995 as concertmaster, having previously served as associate concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and concertmaster of the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra.

During his tenure with QSO, he performed as soloist, notably in performances of triple concertos by Benjamin Frankel and Beethoven. He performed in the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville in 2002 and 2003, and was a soloist at the Energex Brisbane Festival in 2004, performing alongside Nigel Kennedy, which sparked future engagements with the violinist.

He stepped down as concertmaster of QSO in 2011 to pursue broader musical opportunities and continued as associate concertmaster. He also appeared regularly as guest concertmaster with the Adelaide and West Australian symphony orchestras, as well as concertmaster with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The QSO paid tribute to to its colleague on social media: ’Alan brought his signature warmth and precision to every performance, from the first rehearsal to the final bow. He gave his time, talent and mentorship freely, and with immense grace. His musicianship, leadership, and generosity have left an enduring legacy on both the Orchestra and the wider musical life of Queensland.

’Alan helped raise the floor for all of us, which is the best kind of legacy in an orchestra.

’As our concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto said, “Here’s to you, Alan - a true legend, a gentleman, a consummate professional, and the most wonderful colleague and friend.”

’While we are sad to see him go, we know he’ll continue to do what he does best. More chamber music, more teaching and sharing of your knowledge and experience, and more family time. Thank you for everything, Alan!’
