Eduardo Vassallo performed his final concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on 10 December

Eduardo Vassallo, the section leader cello of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), has left the orchestra after 36 years in the position.
Vassallo performed in his final concert with the CBSO on 10 December, where the orchestra performed a programme consisting of works by Richard Strauss – Death and Transfiguration, Oboe Concerto and Also sprach Zarathustra – conducted by Kazuki Yamada.
Vassallo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and begain playing the cello aged six. He studied with Nicolas Finoli in Buenos Aires, with Radu Aldulescu and Pierre Fournier in Switzerland and with Boris Pergamenschikow in Germany.
Prior to his role with the CBSO. Vassallo was the section leader cello of the National Symphony Orchestra in Argentina, a founder member of the National Radio String Quartet of Argentina and a member of the Camerata Lysy in Switzerland where he met his wife, and CBSO violist, Catherine Bower.
He joined the CBSO in 1989 under the directorship of Simon Rattle, initially sharing the position of section leader cello with Ulrich Heinen.
During his tenure with the orchestra, he has worked with numerous conductors, including former principal conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Ed Gardner, Andris Nelsons, Sakari Oramo, and current music director Kazuki Yamada.
