Professional painter Hyung Ki Park has created a collection of sketches of legendary cellists of the past and present. His practice ’scribbly sketches’, as he calls them, charmingly capture the cellist in question’s characteristic demeanour and character. Can you guess who is who?

Park told The Strad about the sketches: ’A few years ago I started playing the cello and composing some music for a hobby. I always try to regularly do quick scribbly sketches for practice to keep skills up, and recently decided to try doing that with cellists as subject matter.

’Music became my new passion and I like sketching subject matters that I feel passionate about.’

Originally from Seoul, Korea, Park is currently based in Las Vegas, NV. As a young adult, he worked for major movie poster companies such as Vox Advertising and Faction Creative before moving to New York to take workshops at Grand Central Atelier and the Art Students League. He has been a frequent exhibitor at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and has had works auctioned by Sotheby’s. He also has a successful career painting private commissions.
