The two luthiers present their German workshop

We’ve been based in this workshop since 1999. It’s in a district of Hamburg called Ottensen, to the west of the city, which is known as ‘Little Paris’ for the number of bars, cafés and restaurants, as well as theatres. It was formerly a hub of steel manufacturing, which meant lots of old factory buildings are now being repurposed for cultural events. Our building was constructed in 1888 as a small furniture factory, and our workshop used to be its showroom – hence the large windows, which give plenty of natural light. Before we moved here, for seven years we had a workshop around the corner, which was much smaller and not very comfortable. We didn’t have to make many alterations to this space, apart from putting down a new floor…
