In this video, the violas of the BBC orchestras play an arrangement of Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’ by James Manson. This recording is dedicated to former BBC Symphony Orchestra Principal Viola, Ruşen Güneş, who died in May aged 80.

BBC SO viola Philip Hall writes: ‘Ruşen was a very special person and inspiring viola-player; his encouragement and generosity towards his students and colleagues was without limit. A huge character, his playing had a wonderful individual quality and a glorious sound. He was also a talented composer and poet and did much to support composers and musicians from his native Turkey. He will be much missed by all who knew him.’
