The former Ébène Quartet violist’s 2016 Charles Coquet viola was last seen at La Teste-de-Buch in southwestern France

French violist and conductor Mathieu Herzog announced on social media that his viola and bow had been stolen between 10am and 11am on Friday 8 August at La Teste-de-Buch in Southwestern France.
The viola was made for Herzog in 2016 by Paris-based luthier Charles Coquet. The bow is inscribed with ’Raffin’.
Alongside the announcement, Herzog said on social media: ‘If someone has information or saw something unusual during this period, please contact me or the police. Thank you for your support and for sharing this message.’
Herzog was a founding member of the Ébène Quartet, with which he played with from 1999 to 2014. He also performs as a conductor and has taught orchestra conducting at the Rachmaninoff Conservatory in Paris since 2024.
