Carpenter will serve as visiting professor of viola for the 2026-27 academic year
Violist David Aaron Carpenter has shared that he will join the faculty of the University of Miami Frost School of Music as visiting professor of viola for the 2026-27 academic year, teaching from August through May.
‘I look forward to working with the next generation of violists and being part of the incredible Frost community,’ he said on social media.
Carpenter was recipient of the 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant, first prize winner of the Walter E. Naumburg Viola Competition in 2006 and first prize winner of the Greenfield Young Artists Competition in 2005.
He began his musical studies on the violin at age six with Nicole DiCecco and later on the viola at the age of eleven, pursuing both instruments at the pre-college divisions of the Juilliard and Manhattan schools of music.
His teachers include Toby Appel, Lewis Kaplan, Isaac Malkin and Christina Khimm, as well as Yuri Bashmet, Roberto Diaz, Nobuko Imai, Robert Mann and Pinchas Zukerman.
He made his debut of the Walton Viola Concerto in 2005 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, going on to perform with leading musicians and orchestras throughout the US and Europe.
As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with artists including Emanuel Ax, Sarah Chang, Sol Gabetta, Leonidas Kavakos, Julian Rachlin, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Yuja Wang and performs regularly at the Schleswig-Holstein and Verbier Music Festivals.
He is the artistic director of the New York-based Salomé Chamber Orchestra, which he co-founded with his siblings Sean and Lauren.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Carpenter holds a degree in political science and international relations from Princeton University.
