Tuulia Hero will take up the role from September 2026
The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has appointed Tuulia Hero as its new professor of violin. Hero will commence the role from September 2026.
The Finnish violinist is a founding member of the award-winning Paddington Trio and Ensemble+. On her appointment, Hero told The Strad:
’It’s a massive honour to already be able to take on this kind of responsibility and to support young violinists in their preparation for a career in music. Teaching performers is an important part of my life, one which really keeps me accountable and even more refreshed than when I’m doing all the playing myself.
’I’m passionate about helping my students develop into confident, curious players who are ready for the changing landscape of our field and able to build sustainable careers. In my own career I have had the privilege to work with exceptional mentors who have pushed me further and given me the tools to build myself up, and I’m keen to pass everything on as I go along.’
Hero also described RNCM as having ’a special learning environment and culture’ that included opportunities for students to perform side-by-side with teachers, learn from visiting top performers, as well as take part in wellbeing and community initiatives and engagements with the professional world.
’The staff and student body are incredibly friendly, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be immersed in such a place,’ she said.
As a member of the Paddington Trio, Hero has won first and special prizes at competitions such as the Parkhouse Award at Wigmore Hall, the Royal Over-Seas League International Competition and the Schumann Chamber Music Prize Frankfurt. The trio will serve as ensemble-in-residence at New England Conservatory from the autumn of 2026. Its debut album Freakshow is set for release on Pentatone in 2027.
Hero holds degrees from Guildhall School of Music and Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, and has studied at the Hanns Eisler School of Music and IMS Prussia Cove.
