Six violinists have been selected to progress to the semi-final chamber round

The Tibor Varga Competition has announced the six violinists who will proceed to the semi-final round of the competition, following an intense second round that took place from 25–26 August at the Pôle Musique in Sion, Switzerland. The twelve candidates performed sonatas from a preset list and a virtuoso piece of their choosing.

The violinists progressing to the third round are as follows:

  • Iohan Coman
  • Helene Freytag
  • Maria Lundina
  • Reika Sato
  • Aozhe Zhang
  • Xunyue Zhang

They will compete in the chamber music round on 28 August at the newly established Noda BCVS Hall in Sion, performing with soprano Ekaterina Shelehova, cellist Thomas Grossenbacher and pianist Adrian Oetiker. The repertoire will consist of Stella Viatoris, op.100 no.2 by Amy Beach; Beethoven’s ‘Come draw me round a cheerful ring’ from Irish Songs WoO 152 no.8; and a choice between piano trios by Brahms, Shostakovich, Ravel and Felix Mendelssohn.

Three will progress to the final round on 30 August, vying for the first prize of CHF20,000 (£18,400). This year’s jury comprises violinists Monika Baer, Ariadne Daskalakis, Sunny Lee, Fumiaki Miura, Lucie Robert, Anton Sorokow and Pavel Vernikov, as well as Grossenbacher and Oetiker.

The Canada Council of the Arts’ Musical Instrument Bank is 40 years old in 2025. This year’s calendar celebrates some its treasures, including four instruments by Antonio Stradivari and priceless works by Montagnana, Gagliano, Pressenda and David Tecchler.
