Violin maker Michael Jaumann died on 31 October 2025 at the age of 59. Since June 2022 he had served as president of the Association of German Violin and Bow Makers (VDG).

Born in Weissenburg, Bavaria, in 1966, Jaumann trained at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making, graduating in 1992 with a journeyman’s certificate. He then worked in Leonberg, near Stuttgart, with Helmut Müller, and later with Florian Leonhard in London, specialising in restoration, repair and tone adjustment. In 1997 he opened his own workshop in Munich, where he continued to work until his death.

In 2013 and 2016, Jaumann was the main organiser of the Munich Violin Days exhibition. He was a member of the Bavarian Musical Instrument Makers’ Guild, where he also served on the examining board, and since 2025 he was a member of the central federal association for instrument makers in Germany.

A statement from the VDG said: ‘With Michael, we have lost not only a passionate advocate for culture and craftsmanship, but also a man whose generosity, warmth, and vision profoundly shaped our community. From his Munich workshop, he inspired musicians and makers alike – a place that reflected his energy, creativity, and love for the art of violin making. He was a mentor to many, sharing his deep knowledge, sense of humour and respect for tradition with all who worked alongside him. The many messages of condolence from abroad have been deeply moving and a great source of strength to us all.

‘Michael’s spirit – his enthusiasm, openness, and humanity – will continue to inspire us as we carry on the work that meant so much to him. We are grateful for all he gave, and for the lasting legacy he leaves behind.’
