The Tibor Varga International Violin Competition has announced its candidates for its 2025 edition, which will be held in Sion, Switzerland, from 22 to 30 August.

The competition’s preselection jury selected 28 violinists from 160 applicants. Six additional candidates have been selected for the waiting list.

The chosen candidates will compete in the first round on 23 and 24 August, focusing on solo violin repertoire. Twelve violinists will progress to the second round on 25 and 26 August, to perform sonatas with piano. A chamber music third round will be held on 28 August for six candidates, who will perform with soprano Ekaterina Shelehova, cellist Thomas Grossenbacher and pianist Adrian Oetiker.

Three finalists will be selected to perform a violin concerto with the South Czech Philharmonic and wind players from Italian orchestras, conducted by Valentin Uryupin.

Six prizes will be awarded, worth a total of almost CHF40,000 (£36,000), with the first prizewinner receiving CHF20,000 (£18,000).

This year’s jury is presided by Pavel Vernikov and comprises Monika Baer, Ariadne Daskalakis, Thomas Grossenbacher, Sunny Lee, Fumiaki Miura, Adrian Oetiker, Lucie Robert and Anton Sorokow.
