Kate Gould and Leo Popplewell will lead the LMP cello section, in news described by the orchestra as ‘twice as nice’
The London Mozart Players (LMP) has announced the appointment of Kate Gould and Leo Popplewell as joint principal cellos.
Gould was a member of the Leopold String Trio from 1991 to 2012 and London Bridge Trio from 2002 to 2020. She is artistic director of the Winchester Chamber Music Festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2027 and co-artistic director of the Ironstone Chamber Music Festival in north Oxfordshire.
A member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe since 2000, Gould has played as guest principal with Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Orchestre Romantique et Révolutionnaire, English Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC symphony orchestras, in addition to LMP.
Popplewell was a founding member of the award-winning Mithras Trio and departed the ensemble in January 2026. Prior to his position at LMP, he performed as guest principal with orchestras across the UK, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and The Hallé.
He read music at Clare College, Cambridge before completing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Louise Hopkins.
