The op.100 Trio is among the final works that Schubert composed, and it inhabits the same expressive world as his late Lieder. There is a striking paradox at its core: although Schubert was seriously ill and physically very weak, the music radiates an unmistakable spirit of hope. Its major key brings a sense of lightness and elegance to the phrasing, but at the same time, the shifts between major and minor harmonies create an undercurrent of melancholy.
