Carlo Carletti was born in 1873 in Pieve di Cento, in the province of Bologna. Like most luthiers from Emilia-Romagna, he started as a self-taught maker; however, his encounters with Raffaele Fiorini and Augusto Pollastri in Bologna and Ettore Soffritti in Ferrara were of fundamental importance to his training.
