Icelandic composer and cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir has created a number of prominent film scores in recent years, including The Revenant (2015), HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries and the new Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix.

In this video she performs on a ‘Halldorophone’, an electro-acoustic string instrument based on the cello developed by Halldor Úlfarsson at the Experimental Music Technologies Lab of the University of Sussex, UK. It uses a system of sympathetic strings and electronics to induce controlled feedback for drone-based musical experimentation.
