The double bassist, composer and educator died of cancer, aged 69

The International Society of Bassists (ISB) has announced the death of double bassist, composer and educator, Lloyd Goldstein. He was 69 years old.
Goldstein began playing the double bass in high school and went on to study at the University of Miami under Dr. Lucas Drew, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in double bass performance. He also received diplomas in teaching and performance from the Institute François Rabbath. Goldstein was a frequent and popular presenter at ISB conventions and other national conferences.
He served 21 years with the Florida Orchestra and 18 years as an artist‑in‑residence and member of the Arts in Medicine team at Florida’s Moffitt Cancer Center. There, he was the first recipient of the Patti K. Halula Legacy Award in 2026 for his dedicated and compassionate service providing live therapeutic music for patients and their families.
Goldstein was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2025 and publicly shared his journey through chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He is survived by his wife, Mary Grace Bronson, who was his partner and caregiver throughout his illness.
’Lloyd’s legacy will continue as an uplifting reminder of the power of music to provide connection and comfort in this world,’ the ISB said in a statement. ‘We will never forget you, Lloyd!’
