Japanese violinist Seina Matsuoka takes up the role

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of violinist Seina Matsuoka as third concertmaster.

The Japanese violinist received her musical education at Soai University and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, studying violin with Machie Oguri, Michael Frischenschlager and Peter Schuhmayer, and chamber music with Stefan Mendl and Johannes Meissl.

Matsuoka has enjoyed competition success in recent years, including victory and three special awards at the Szymanowski International Competition in 2023.

In 2022, she was winner of the Jury Encouragement Prize at the 8th Sendai International Competition, prizewinner at the 1st International Music Competitions VŠMU and 10th Fritz Kreisler International Competition and was a semi-finalist at the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

As a teenager, she won first prize at the KOBE International Music Competition and the 64th Student Music Concours of Japan. She won second prize at the Munetsugu Angel Violin Competition in 2015.

She is part of the Aka Duo with pianist Yuto Kiguchi, which won first prize and the audience prize at the 26th Giulio Rospigliosi International Chamber Music Competition, first prize and a special prize at the Pinerolo Torino International Chamber Music Competition.
