The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has appointed Canadian violinist Andrew Beer as its new concertmaster. He will begin in the role in the 2026-27 season.

Kenneth Kwok, CEO of the Singapore Symphony Group, said of the appointment: ’We look forward to the artistry Andrew Beer will bring to the SSO stage in our new season and beyond, working with incoming Music Director Hannu Lintu. Our deep appreciation goes to our Co-Principal Guest Concertmasters David Coucheron and Kevin Lin for their support during the interim.’

Beer shared: ’I am extremely excited and honoured to be joining the Singapore Symphony, a world-class orchestra in a deeply multicultural city. I look forward to working with the SSO team, helping the orchestra continue on its outstanding path of growth, and further enhancing its impact in Singapore and worldwide.’

Beer joins the SSO from the Auckland Philharmonia, where was concertmaster since 2014. Before then, he was assistant principal second violin of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2014.

He has performed across Europe, Asia, Australasia and the Americas, both on stages and in broadcast. Beer has appeared as guest concertmaster with leading orchestras including the Hallé, City of Birmingham, Melbourne, Adelaide, Vancouver and New Zealand symphony orchestras, and Opera North.

As a chamber musician, Beer is a passionate advocate for contemporary music and maintains an active performance life in tango as part of the quintet Aotango and world music. He has performed at renowned festivals including Music@Menlo, Prussia Cove, Banff, Orford, Domaine Forget, Tanglewood, and Aspen.

A Carnegie Hall and Juilliard School fellow, Andrew holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and Stony Brook University. He has served on the selection panel of every Michael Hill International Violin Competition since 2015.
