The musician and educator taught at the University of Louisville School of Music for almost 40 years

American violinist and pedagogue Peter McHugh died on 7 June 2026 at the age of 87. For almost 40 years he taught at the University of Louisville (UoL) School of Music, retiring in 2014 as distinguished professor of violin emeritus. In 1993 he was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA).
Born in 1939 in Brooklyn, McHugh studied the violin at the Juilliard School’s Preparatory Division. He received a degree in education from SUNY Fredonia in 1963, and moved to Louisville, KY, on a graduate playing fellowship. He earned a masters from UoL and on graduating in 1965, he joined the Dallas Symphony for one season, returning to Louisville to become the Louisville Orchestra’s assistant concertmaster and later concertmaster.
McHugh performed with many renowned orchestras – often as concertmaster – including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, Oklahoma Symphony, and the Nashville Symphony. In addition, he was a member of the Academy Awards orchestra for three years, and played in studio orchestras for more than 80 film scores. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians and ASTA.
McHugh joined the UoL School of Music in 1966, starting as its director of preparatory studies. He received distinguished alumni awards from Fredonia (1993) and Louisville (2005).
The UoL paid tribute to McHugh on its Facebook page: ‘Professor McHugh dedicated his career to mentoring generations of violinists and string musicians, serving first as Director of Preparatory Studies and later retiring as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Violin. His commitment to excellence and belief in the transformative power of music left a lasting impact on thousands of students and colleagues.
‘We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Carole, his son, Patrick, the McHugh family, and his many former students, friends, and colleagues.’
