The BBC has indicated it would join talks about the future funding of British orchestras, reports the Guardian. The corporation, which funds five orchestras across the UK, is facing budget cuts of its own. But director general Mark Thompson told MPs on the House of Commons culture, media and sports select committee that the BBC would be willing to discuss closer cooperation between its orchestras and those leading UK orchestras, such as the Hallé, which are being threatened with cuts to their Arts Council England funding. He added that the BBC would be open to discussing 'the future of orchestral provision in the UK'.
