Nancy Zhou, winner of the 2018 Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition, performs a tribute to Isaac Stern’s Centennial on 28 July with pianist Zhen ‘Victor’ Chen, livestreamed from New York.

On the programme are works by George Gershwin, Arthur Benjamin, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Chen Yi, William Grant Still and Béla Bartók.

Zhou commented: ‘Time and again, resilience and reflection show their strengths in periods of turbulence and difficulty. These are the values that Mr. Isaac Stern stood for - his commitment to music as a force of peace and connection inspired us to compile a programme of pieces that uphold these values. The pieces are microcosms of creative and cultural diversity, and together, they stand for unifying values of empathy and compassion. The program explores beloved staples in the canon as well as lesser exposed gems, such as those written by William Grant Still and Chen Yi. It is through this collection of works that we hope to bring you, as the listener, closer to different rhythmic idioms, elements of dance, and distinctive creative spirits. May they resonate with you.’
