Doppelgänger Dances for violin solo was written in 2017 by composer Melia Watras. Her husband, violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim, performs the work on the upcoming album Kinetic.
This video for the fifth movement of Doppelgänger Dances combines music and dance with choreographer and performer Myssi Robinson.
‘As concertmaster and solo violinist for Pacific Northwest Ballet, I have found myself at the intersection of music and dance for over 15 years,’ says Lim. ’Dance has shaped my career in unexpected and delightful ways.’
’Doppelgänger Dances explores aspects of doubles,’ says composer Watras, stating her fascination with doppelgänger stories and the musical use of the double.
’In my piece, I play with the idea of musical doubles, creating variations on thematic material quoted from my earlier composition, William Wilson, which includes text and takes its title from Edgar Allan Poe’s doppelgänger tale.’
Kinetic is released on Planet M Records on 24 January 2025.
