David Soyer, longtime cellist of the Guarneri Quartet, has died
at the age of 87. He founded the quartet in 1964 with violinists
Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley and violist Michael Tree. After
37 years with the group, he retired in 2001 and was succeeded by
his former student Peter Wiley.
Born in Philadelphia, Soyer studied with Diran Alexanian, Emanuel
Feuermann and Pablo Casals. He taught at the Curtis Institute of
Music for more than 40 years, and was also on the faculty of the
Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. See the April
issue of The Strad magazine for a full obituary.
