Kindred spirits is the theme of this programme from Vadim Gluzman. This comes via the artistic connection he feels with fellow violinist Zachary Carrettin, harpsichordist Mina Gajić and their eight-piece, Boulder-based COmpass REsonance ensemble. It also derives from the stylistic affinity between Bach and Silvestrov.
The performances are sprightly, nicely polished ones, complemented by the warm recording (made in Boulder Adventist Church). Gluzman has wonderful tonal depth and sweetness and the ensemble partners him keenly, with lucid textures, clean lines and air to breathe between the phrases.
Highlights include a radiant opening movement to Bach’s E major Concerto, while the slow movement of the D minor is beautifully balanced, Gluzman and Carrettin’s articulation, phrasing and embellishment constantly developing, with nothing sounding overdone. Silvestrov’s serenades for solo violin combine spaciousness, spiritual melancholy and polished beauty. His Homage adds piano and demands sensitive tone and voicing for its sparse writing to succeed, qualities Gluzman and Gajić supply in spades. Don’t miss this beautiful and heart-pricking album.
