Exuberant joy is the lasting feeling left by this high-concept mega-project from US violinist, teacher and (clearly) musical force of nature Curtis Stewart. His 24 American Caprices might follow in the footsteps of Paganini, Wieniawski and many others – certainly in their unapologetic pyrotechnics and breathtaking technical wizardry – but they take a distinctly stateside perspective in offering solo-violin commentaries on iconic tracks across pop, jazz and more.

Sometimes the originals are embedded clearly within Stewart’s effusive creations: his heartstring-tugging caprice on ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ circles Stevie Wonder’s tune to glorious effect. At other times, however, they’re barely recognisable: Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ inspires a thoughtful, sometimes Glass-like rumination that’s full of emotional intensity.

Stewart is the composer of all of them, but he invites guest players to join the party: among them, Tai Murray delivers a fantastical, gutsy caprice on Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’, while Deborah Buck’s big-hearted account of the caprice on Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘September’ bristles with vibrant rhythm. Several younger players among Stewart’s performing cohort also make memorable contributions, including Max Brown in the caprice on ‘Amazing Grace’, which showcases his velvety playing. It’s perhaps a release to dip into, but Stewart’s responses to these classic tracks are thoroughly convincing and often very moving. An exceptional collection, captured in close, warm sound.
