Chinese violinist Tianyou Liu receives the first prize of PLN100,000 (£20,500)

The seventh edition of the International Tadeusz Wroński Solo Violin Competition took place from 22–28 September at the Frederick Chopin University of Music (UMFC) in Warsaw, Poland. It was open to violinists of all nationalities up to the age of 35.

The first prize of PLN100,000 (£20,500) was awarded to Chinese violinist Tianyou Liu, along with the PLN2,000 (£400) Stanisław Santor Prize for the most interesting artistic personality of the competition; the second prize of PLN70,000 (£14,300) to Polish violinist Gaja Wilewska, as well as the PLN3,000 (£600) special prize for the best Polish competitor; and the third prize of PLN50,000 (£10,200) to Polish violinist Marcelina Rucińska.

The fourth prize of PLN20,000 (£4,000) went to German violinist Maya Alexandra Kasprzak, and the fifth prize of PLN10,000 (£2,000) to Polish violinist Hanna Pozorska. Pozorska also received the Stanisław Prize of PLN4,000 (£800) for the best performance of a fantasy by Georg Philipp Telemann and, as the best laureate from UMFC, both the Chopin University of Music prize of PLN5,000 (£1,000) and a €3,000 financial scholarship sponsored by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Special mentions, each worth PLN2,000 (£400), were given to Japanese violinists Kazushi Omoto, Kimura Wakana, and Mana Ishizuka; and Polish violinists Sofia Wadzicka, Emilia Linka, Wiktoria Białostocka, Doris Mose, and Paulina Tomczuk. Linka also received the special prize of PLN1,000 (£200) as the youngest Polish competitor.

Liu was born in 2009 and recently competed in the preliminary round of the Sendai International Music Competition. In 2021, he was awarded second prize in the category for violinists aged eleven and under at the Ysaÿe International Music Competition.

This year’s jury comprised Katarzyna Duda, Krzysztof Meyer, Bartłomiej Nizioł, Reiko Otani, Nazrin Rashidova, Magdalena Rezler, Dora Scharzberg, Takashi Shimizu, and Michael Vaiman, with Jakub Jakowicz as secretary of the jury, Sławomir Tomasik as vice-chairman, Krzysztof Jakowicz as honorary chairman, and Konstanty Andrzej Kulka as chairman of the jury.
