The Russian violinist and conductor died aged 63 onboard a flight to Istanbul

The death has been announced of Russian violinist and conductor Sergei Stadler on 20 April at the age of 63. According to reports, he became ill while onboard a flight from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Istanbul, Turkey. An emergency stop was made in Bucharest, Romania, but doctors were unable to resuscitate him.
Born in St. Petersburg in 1962 to a musical family, Stadler studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and its associated Special Music School, later completing his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory.
In 2013, Stadler initiated the creation of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the chief conductor and artistic director. He also served as chief conductor of St. Petersburg Conservatory’s Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Symphony Orchestra of Russia, and the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Stadler taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, the Moscow Conservatory, and at the St. Petersburg State University. In 2024, he was awarded the Russian Federation’s Order ‘For Merit in Culture and Art’ in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
