Dohms was a member of the orchestra for 41 years
The Berlin Philharmonic has announced the death of its former violinist, Peter Dohms. Dohms died on 31 August 2026 aged 87, following a short, serious illness.
Born in 1939, Dohms took up violin lessons aged ten with Georg Diburtz, who was then a member of the Berlin Philharmonic and a former pupil of Joseph Joachim.
Dohms studied at music acadamies in Berlin and Freiburg, where his teachers included Siegfried Borries, then first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Sándor Végh.
He held positions in Bad Brückenau and with the Sándor Végh Chamber Orchestra, before joining the Berlin Philharmonic in 1963 as a member of the first violin section. He remained in the orchestra until his retirement in 2004, after 41 years with the orchestra.
Dohms was also a long-standing member of the Philharmonic Virtuosos chamber ensemble.
