The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has announced the appointment of double bassist Ha Young Jung as principal bass, and that violist Andrew Eng will join the viola section.

Jung is a graduate of London’s Royal College of Music, the Juilliard School, Yale University, and Boston University. She is a laureate of many notable competitions, having received first prize at the Koussevitzky Young Artist Award and the International Society of Bassists’ Competition, the grand prize of Moscow’s International String Competition, the silver medal at the Serge Koussevitzky International Double Bass Competition, and Musician of the Year at the Solti Foundation.

She has served as principal bassist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and frequently performed as an extra bass for the New York Philharmonic, for which she held a teaching artist apprenticeship in 2020, and from 2018-2020 she was a fellow of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect. Other ensembles she has played with include Chineke!, English National Opera, and the London Symphony Orchchestra, as well as appearances as a soloist with orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, Southbank Sinfonia, and Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.

Eng is a graduate of Toronto’s Royal Conservatory, the University of Toronto and the Longy School of Music in Massachusetts, studying with teachers including Zvi Zeitlin, Joseph Silverstein, Emmanuel Borok, Laura Bossert, and Roger Tapping. He has performed with ensembles including the National, Annapolis and Albany symphony orchestras, and Washington National Opera.

He was a founding member of the Grammy nominated A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra, and has served as assistant concertmaster of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Eng has also been part of the Bernardo Monk Tango Quartet, the Found Objects Jazz String Trio, the Chagalll-Boston String Quartet, and the Chatham string trio.

The BSO announced the appointments in a post on social media: ‘Please join us in welcoming these talented musicians to the BSO!’
