The cellist was a long-serving member of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra
The death has been announced of Jacek Gebczyński, a Polish cellist who lived in Mexico. He was 78.
Gebczyński received a degree from the Karol Szymanowski Conservatory in Katowice, before beginning his career as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, with appearances in major concert halls of Europe, Asia and America.
As an orchestral musician, Gebczynski was a member of the National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Poland, Antwerp Philharmonic in Belgium and the Classic Chamber Orchestra. He served as assistant principal cellist in the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra since November 1997.
From 1992 to 1996 Gebczynski was solo cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Basque Country in Spain. He also served as artistic director of the Bilbao Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and the chamber orchestra Euskal Kamerata.
He recorded the soundtrack of solo cello for the 1998 Spanish film El Sudor de los Ruiseñores.
As a chamber musician, he was a member of the Rachmaninoff Piano Trio in New York. He formed the Sakssonski-Gebczynski-Belenko Piano Trio in 1997 in Mexico City, which performed standard repertoire, as well as the members’ own pop and jazz arrangements.
The Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra posted a tribute to Gebczyński on social media:
’With more than 28 years of service, commitment and dedication, [Gebczyński] was part of our orchestra from 1 November 1997, leaving a profound mark on colleagues, friends and generations of musicians.
’His talent, generosity and love for music will remain part of the artistic and human legacy of our institution.’
