The announcement coincides with the organisation’s expansion beyond London, to reach cellists across the UK

The British Cello Society (BCS), formerly the London Cello Society, has announced the members of its new honorary board.
Ralph Kirshbaum is the society’s honorary patron, while Steven Isserlis has been named honorary president. Guy Johnston will serve as artistic adviser.
The BCS launched in September 2025 after its decision in 2023 to expand its reach beyond London into a national organisation. Three hubs have been established in Cambridge, Chichester and Manchester; the executive and advisory boards of which will be inspired by the honorary board members for guidance, ideas and creative direction.
Johnston commented on his appointment: ’I am delighted to accept the invitation to serve as artistic advisor to the British Cello Society, alongside my past mentors, honorary patron Ralph Kirshbaum and honorary president Steven Isserlis.
’Formerly the London Cello Society, it has grown into a nationwide organisation reaching cellists across the UK. The Society has been a source of inspiration for as long as I can remember, and I am deeply grateful to Selma Gokcen for enabling me to meet and work with Bernard Greenhouse towards the end of his life.
’The study of pedagogy and the continual learning curve of performing and teaching deepen with each year, and I feel honoured to be part of this special community as we shape its future together.’
The BCS official launch event will be held on 25 January 2026 at the Royal Academy of Music, Angela Burgess Hall and features the first UK live screening of the film Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy written and produced by Allegro Films/Sky Arts.
