Allegro Films presents Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy, which digs into the original film archives to tell the definitive story of who she was and why she was such an extraordinary musician.

Had she still been alive, Jacqueline du Pré would have celebrated her 80th birthday on 26 January 2025. Introduced and narrated by Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy tells the story of the enigmatic cellist, whose career was cruelly curtailed by multiple sclerosis when she was just 28 years old. It is full of candid moments offstage and in rehearsal, together with powerful concert performances.

The film’s charismatic cast of interviewees provide an incomparable insight into why the affection for du Pré and the wonder at her playing remains undiminished, nearly 40 years after her death in 1987.

Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy will premiere on PBS America platforms from 24 January 2025; then on Sky Arts and Arte in the coming months.

The Strad January 2025 issue features Jacqueline du Pré on the cover - read the article here.
