The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has officially announced
Jonathan Crow as its new concertmaster. The orchestra's music
director, Peter Oundjian, had previously made an onstage
announcement of Crow's impending appointment during a concert in
June.
The 33-year-old Crow currently teaches at the Schulich School of
Music at Montreal's McGill University but will be moving to Toronto
with his wife and two children before the start of the TSO season.
He will make his debut with the orchestra on 22 September, and will
perform with the TSO for at least 14 concert weeks in his first
season as he balances his remaining teaching commitments with his
new playing commitments.
As concertmaster, Crow will have the use of a 1738 Guarneri 'del
Gesù' violin, the 'Dykes','Stephens','Kroll'. The violin was
purchased in 2008 by Dr Edward Pong, who has made it available to
the TSO from the start of the orchestra's upcoming 90th-anniversary
season. The last known professional player of the violin was
American soloist and composer William Kroll (1901–80).
