In this video, violinist Rachel Barton Pine and her daughter, Sylvia Pine, visit WFMT, an FM radio station in Chicago, to inaugurate a new family-friendly request programme ‘Saturday Morning Listener’s Choice.’  Here they perform two works from forthcoming ‘Music by Black Composers Violin Volume 2’: ‘Such Thanks to Spirits’ (1936) from the musical play ‘Afiwa’ by Nicholas Ballanta (1893-1962) from Sierra Leone, and ‘Serenata’ from ‘A Sertaneja’ by the earliest known Black woman composer, Francisca “Chiquinha” Gonzaga (1847-1935) from Brazil.

Music by Black Composers was founded in 2001 by the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation. It continues to catalogue music by Black composers, as well as offer free online resources, in order to promote and increase accessiblity of music previously cast aside.
