Belgian double bassist Wies de Boevé has been announced as the new principal double bassist of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. He leaves the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra after ten years, having performed as co-principal for seven years and as principal for three years.
Among his accolades, de Boevé has won first prize at competitions including the 2016 ARD International Music Competition and the 2017 International Bottesini Competition. He was the first double bassist to ever win the top prize at the German Music Competition in 2015.
He currently teaches at the Zurich University of Arts and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, and has coached the double basses of the European Union Youth Orchestra since 2013.
He has also made guest appearances with ensembles including the Berlin and Vienna philharmonics, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and the London Symphony, as well as collaborating in chamber music with musicians including Janine Jansen, Isabelle Faust, Bruno Giuranna and Christophe Coin.
De Boevé shared the news of his new role in a post on social media:
‘I’m excited to continue my journey with the Tonhalle- Orchester Zürich as principal bass. Coming back to the orchestra, which helped me with my first steps in the symphonic world now 18 years ago! A page turns but the music continues.’
