Double bassist Sasha Witteveen will assume the role on 1 August

Dutch double bassist Sasha Witteveen has been announced as the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra’s new principal double bassist, starting 1 August. She succeeds Spanish double bassist Luis Cabrera.
Born in 2003, Witteveen is a graduate of the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf, studying with teachers including Rick Stotijn, Olivier Thiery, and Naomi Shaham.
She has won the first prize at competitions including the Princess Christina Competition, the British Double Bass Competition, the Viennese Bass Days Competition, and the International Youth Bass Competition in Lucca.
Witteveen has performed with ensembles including the LGT Soloists, the European Union Youth Orchestra, and was an academist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
She shared her excitement for the new role on social media:
