Double bassist Davide La Rosa and cellist Tao Wei Huang were due to perform with the Orchestra delle Cento Città as part of Music Fest Perugia
According to a report by Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata, Italian double bassist Davide La Rosa, 55, has died due to what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning at the Hotel Fortuna in Perugia, Italy. As a member of the Orchestra delle Cento Città, he was in the city to perform a concert at the Sala dei Notari as part of Music Fest Perugia on Friday 31 July.
Concerns grew when La Rosa and his cellist colleague Tao Wei Huang, 56, failed to appear for the concert. Orchestra staff attempted to reach the musicians to no avail, and so emergency services were called and the concert cancelled.
La Rosa was subsequently found lifeless and Huang in serious condition in the hotel room. According to La Milano, Huang was transferred to a hospital in Ravenna and was treated in a hyperbaric chamber.
According to reports, La Rosa showed clear signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. It is suspected that the poisonous gas spread through the air conditioning system, as a significant amount was detected in the room and on several floors of the building. The hotel was evacuated, the gas systems turned off, and an investigation has been launched alleging manslaughter and grievous body harm.
