Two violinists and two cellists join the ensemble, including a new associate principal cello

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has announced the appointment of five new members. They are US cellist Vincent Garcia-Hettinger as associate principal cello, South Korean violinists Soomi Park and Jaeyoun Hwang as second violins, US cellist Charles Zandieh, as well as US French horn player Henry Friedman.
Garcia-Hettinger has studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Peter Wiley and Gary Hoffman, as well as with teachers including Ken Freudigman, Steve Doane and Johannes Moser. He won the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist competition in 2020, the fourth prize at the 2023 Klein International String Competition and the third prize in the 2023 Sphinx Competition’s junior division.
Park is a graduate of institutions including the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, Seoul Arts High School, Yonsei University and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She has attended the Tanglewood Festival, won the 2023 Christine Marie Ofiesh Honors Chamber Competition and has performed as a member of the New World Symphony Orchestra.
Hwang is a graduate of the Seoul National University and has attended the Pacific Music Festival.
Zandieh has studied at the Juilliard School with Clara Kim and Yale University with Paul Watkins. He has won the Juilliard School Pre-College competition twice, been a finalist in the Juilliard School College Cello Competition twice, and won the Adelphi Orchestra Young Artist Competition twice.
