The Center for Musical Excellence (CME) has announced violinist Christina Nam, 22, as its newest Young Artist. The programme offers high-level training and support to talented young musicians in the US, providing guidance for a successful career.

Among its artist mentors, CME lists Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster David Kim, violinist Robert McDuffie – founder of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University – and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra violinist Yoon Kwon Costello.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Nam is currently attending at the Julliard School on a full scholarship, studying with Catherine Cho and Donald Weilerstein. Her accomplishments include winning Juilliard’s Peter Mennin Prize, the Verbier Festival Academy’s Prix Reyl Award, and second prize in the Cooper International Violin Competition.

She is a member of the Amara Trio, which won the gold medal in the Chesapeake International Chamber Competition, and has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra and the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra.

Nam currently performs on a 1905 Stefano Scarampella violin, on loan from luthier and restorer Ronald Ji.

Nam will make her debut at the CME’s 15th anniversary Gala in Hampton, NJ, on 5 October. Previous string players that have joined the young artists programme include violinists Matthew Hakkarainen and Angela Wee, and cellist Andrew Byun.
